DETAILED PROGRAM
17:00 Arrivals
17:30 Intro
17:40 "Revamping an old medium: integrating social media with television" - David Geerts
Abstract: Social networking is not only successful on the web, but is now also starting to change the television landscape: websites with video content (e.g. YouTube, CurrentTV), connected televisions and set-top boxes (e.g. Google TV, Apple TV), online TV widgets (e.g. Connected TV from Yahoo!), and iPhone/iPad apps integrating twitter and facebook with television (e.g. Miso, tvChatter), are - or will be - radically transforming how people watch and interact around television content. These developments are being called "Social TV", allowing remote viewers to interact with each other via the television set, smartphones, tablets or the PC. In this presentation, David Geerts will give examples of previous and current Social TV applications, presenting a framework which categorizes their most salient features. David will also show how these applications need to be designed and evaluated in order to match active social interactions with the ‘lean-back' nature of television. Finally, he will discuss possible future developments in the integration of social media and television.
Bio: David Geerts has a PhD in Social Sciences at the K.U.Leuven, where he leads the Centre for User Experience Research (CUO) at the faculty of Social Sciences. David is specialized in user-centered design and evaluation of future ICT applications, such as multi-touch surfaces, social interactive television, serious games and social media, working on several local and EU projects. He teaches a course on Human-Computer Interaction for master students of the faculties of Social Sciences and Economy. David Geerts is member of the IFIP TC14 WG6 on Entertainment Computing, is co-founder and chair of the Belgian ACM SIGCHI.be chapter, is part of the EuroITV steering committee and was program chair of the EuroITV2009 conference on interactive television.
18:15 Elections for the SIGCHI.be board
Each year, members of SIGCHI.be need to elect the SIGCHI.be board. This year, we'll have a number of fresh faces as candidate for the positions of chair, secretary and treasurer. The candidates will briefly present themselves, after which the SIGCHI.be members attending this event can anonymously vote with paper ballots.
18:30 Networking activity: Show'n'Tell
SIGCHI.be is all about sharing ideas and being part of a community, and we believe that this should be fun and interactive, so we are happy to repeat one of our most popular networking activities: Show'n'Tell. The idea is simple: you bring something to the event, related to HCI, which you would like to talk about. This could be something that inspired you, something you are working on, or the latest HCI related book you're reading. Some examples: a paper prototype you are currently designing, Donald Norman's latest book, a picture of one of your site visits, or the newest iPad app you installed. In small groups of three or four people, you can explain what this object means to you. It is a fun way to get to know your colleagues even better!
19:30 Snacks and drinks
Snacks and drinks will be provided by "Mixed With Love"
We hope to see you in Brussels on Monday 11 October at 17:00!
